ADMINISTRATOR’S LETTER
By Russell M. Swody, Historic Site Administrator
Finally, there is some snow and ice on the ground here at
the homestead and it appears we may have found the long lost
winter. In spite of this I know spring is just around the
corner. I know this is so because we are gearing up for
Charter Day on March 9, our first event of the 2008 season.
There is more information about this event located in a
separate piece in this newsletter. We have been lining up
another year of great events and the new 2008 calendar of
events is included too.
Besides planning and gearing up for our 2008 season, we have
been busy with numerous projects while we have been closed
to the public. Our new 6-inch water line is currently being
installed. This line runs from Route 422 into the area where
our buildings are clustered. This new water supply will feed
a fire hydrant and be available to supply a future fire
suppression for some of our buildings. We were in middle of
an exterior painting project when we had to suspend that due
to the arrival of cold weather. The painting project will be
completed in the spring. The education building is done and
the visitor center is nearly completed. Many people have
been complimenting us on the result. The Weiser house should
be painted when the project resumes in the spring. Finally,
we expect to repair the roof of the Weiser house this spring
with a new underlayment system and replacing about half of
the clay roof tile that are wearing out or damaged. A big
project that was not planned was cleaning up all the damage
to our trees and shrubs caused by two ice storms in
December. It has been a monumental task and I want to
acknowledge the hard work of our Groundskeeper Arnel Greth
and Murdough’s Landscaping & Tree Service. For all of these
reasons, I hope you will forgive us the mess during Charter
Day and the spring season as we work our way through all
these projects.
I want to take a moment to thank our Friends of the Conrad
Weiser Homestead’s for their continued hard work and
financial support of the site and our projects. We couldn’t
do it without them and our dedicated members and volunteers.
At the Friends annual meeting in January, Garry Zerbe was
elected to the board of directors of the Friends. We would
like to warmly welcome Garry. I want to also give a
heartfelt thank you to Lester Breininger and Sheila Miller
for their long tenure and many contributions while serving
on the board for over a decade. We wish them well in their
future endeavors.
We hope to see many of you on Charter Day or during our 2008
season!
Warmest regards,
Russ Swody
