CHARTER DAY
Womelsdorf, Pa. – The Conrad
Weiser Homestead will celebrate “Charter Day” on Sunday,
March 9, 2008 from noon until 4 PM. Charter Day was
established by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
Commission to honor the anniversary of the 1681 Charter
given by King Charles II of England to William Penn that
founded Pennsylvania. To mark the occasion, there will be
costumed living history interpreters from the First and
Third Battalions of the Pennsylvania Regiment on site in
French and Indian War garb, a new addition to our permanent
exhibit will be on display, and our Spring Book Sale in our
Museum Store will kick off. To encourage the public to take
part in this celebration, admission is free.
The military re-enactors will provide living history
demonstrations of military life during the French & Indian
War. The re-enactors are members of the 1st and 3rd
Battalions of the Pennsylvania Regiment of Foote. These are
re-enactment units of the original units which fought in the
French & Indian War. Conrad Weiser commanded the 1st
Battalion, Pennsylvania Regiment and oversaw a line of
fortification from the Delaware River to the Susquehanna
River. The 1st Battalion, Pennsylvania Regiment is based at
the Conrad Weiser Homestead. The 3rd Battalion, Pennsylvania
Regiment is based in Sunbury.
A new addition to our permanent exhibit will be on display
on Charter Day. It will include two letters written and
signed by Weiser as well as an indenture signed by him as
well. The indenture was recently conserved. Funding for the
new exhibit and conservation was made possible by the PHMC,
the Society for Colonial Wars in Pennsylvania, both
Pennsylvania and National Chapters and the Friends of the
Conrad Weiser Homestead.
To further mark the celebration and the first event of the
2008 season the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead, who
operate the museum store, will hold a Spring Book Sale
offering a 10% discount on their inventory of books and
merchandise to the general public and a 20% discount to
members of the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead. This
discount is not available on consignment items and some
merchandise.
The site’s permanent exhibit, housed in three buildings,
will also be available. Through artifacts, images and text
panels the exhibit tells the story of: Weiser’s life, the
people who visited Weiser’s home, and the development of the
Homestead as a State Historic Site. Those who have an
interest in local history, Indians, the French & Indian War,
the Pennsylvania Germans, or Conrad Weiser will find the
exhibit informative and thought provoking.
The historic site preserves a portion of the original Weiser
Homestead and interprets his life and important work. Conrad
Weiser is remembered as Pennsylvania’s foremost colonial
“peacemaker” and ambassador to Indians during the turbulent
mid-18th century. Weiser was influential in the founding of
Reading in 1748 and Berks County in 1752. Today, Weiser’s
home and gravesite are situated within a 26-acre memorial
park designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers firm of
Landscape Architects.
